A Year of Stories, Perspectives, and Possibilities: 2025-26 Speakers Bureau Year in Review

What happens when students hear directly from people who have built careers in healthcare, business, skilled trades, public service, entrepreneurship, and beyond?

Sometimes, it changes the way they think about their future.

This year, BEP's Speakers Bureau brought professionals into classrooms and community spaces across Waterloo Region, creating opportunities for students to hear honest stories about career journeys—the successes, the setbacks, the pivots, and everything in between.

And if student feedback tells us anything, it's that these conversations matter.

"I Don't Need to Have It All Figured Out"

One of the most common themes we heard from students this year was relief.

Relief that successful adults don't always have a perfectly mapped-out plan.

Relief that changing directions isn't failure.

Relief that it's okay not to know exactly what comes next.

"That we don't need to immediately know what we want to do after graduating and success takes time." – Student

"I learned that it's possible to have a successful career even if you do not have an exact plan out of high school." – Student

For many students, hearing real career journeys helped remove some of the pressure that often comes with planning for life after graduation.

The Stories Students Remember Most

The most impactful presentations weren't necessarily about job titles or qualifications.

They were about people.

Students consistently shared that they appreciated hearing the full story—not just the highlights, but the challenges too.

"I love that they talked about the negative and positive aspects, and the challenges they face." – Student

"When choosing a career, you can go through a lot of pivots and changes, which is okay." – Student

When speakers share the realities behind their careers, students gain a more authentic understanding of what success can look like—and how rarely it follows a straight line.

Expanding Perspectives

For some students, a single presentation shifted the way they viewed their future.

Whether it was discovering a career they had never considered or realizing there are multiple paths to success, these conversations helped students think beyond the options they already knew.

"I always thought that I would be a failure if I did not go to university. After this presentation, I learned that there are so many other career options for me, and I do not have to limit myself to one path to become successful." – Student

Others left feeling inspired to explore new opportunities and seek advice from those around them.

"I think instead of just going to university, which was my initial plan, I may try other things. I originally had one job in mind, but now I'm considering other options." – Student

Sometimes, all it takes is hearing someone else's experience to open the door to a new possibility.

Why These Conversations Matter

Career exploration isn't just about learning what jobs exist.

It's about helping young people build confidence, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and see opportunities they may not have considered before.

Throughout the year, our volunteer speakers did exactly that.

By sharing their experiences, they encouraged students to stay curious, embrace change, and recognize that there is no single roadmap to success.
