Bridging Generations: Students Tackle Real-World Challenges at the RIA ICE Challenge
April 14, 2026
The Business Education Partnership (BEP) recently teamed up with the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) to host an ICE (Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship) Challenge.
What happens when you bring fresh, youthful perspectives into a space dedicated to the science of aging? You get a room full of heart, innovation, and a roadmap for stronger community connections.
The Business Education Partnership (BEP) recently teamed up with the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA) to host an ICE (Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship) Challenge. The mission? To answer one critical question:
"How might we increase human connections between youth and residents in long-term care and retirement through intergenerational programming?"
Setting the Stage for Innovation
The day began at the RIA’s state-of-the-art facility, where students were immersed in the world of senior care and clinical research. To solve a problem effectively, you first have to understand the people behind it.
Through presentations, students learned about the importance of "enhancing life" and the unique challenges faced by seniors in long-term care, particularly social isolation.
From Ideas to Action
Armed with sticky notes, markers, student teams dove into the "Ideation" phase. The energy in the room was electric as they moved from broad concepts to concrete project plans.
The solutions were as diverse as they were creative. Some of the standout "Intergenerational Programming" pitches included:
"Build a Bear" Nights: A heartwarming way for youth and residents to create something together to share with family.
The Tournament of Champions: Weekly game nights (from Uno to Chess) where competitive spirits bring different generations together.
Partner Talent Shows: Showcasing the unique skills of both the young and the young-at-heart.
Why Intergenerational Connection Matters
This ICE Challenge wasn't just an academic exercise; it was an exploration of empathy. By designing programs that encourage youth to step into long-term care homes, we aren't just providing entertainment for residents—we are teaching students the value of mentorship, the depth of lived history, and the power of a simple conversation.
A Huge Thank You
Events like this are only possible through strong community collaboration. We want to extend a massive thank you to our sponsor and host, the Research Institute for Aging (RIA). Their commitment to "Enhancing Life" provided the perfect backdrop for our students to grow as leaders and innovators.
As these students head back to their classrooms, they carry with them more than just a certificate of completion. They carry a new understanding of what it means to build a community that values every generation.
