Executive Director Note
Connecting Youth & The Changing Workforce
January 29, 2026
A Message from our Executive Director - January 2026
In times that feel uncertain or heavy, I’m reminded of hope when I connect with a young person through our programs. Sometimes that’s a conversation with a Youth Ambassador who shows up prepared with thoughts about how we can do better. Other times it’s a group of students spending the day in an ICE Challenge, working through an idea to reduce isolation among seniors. It can also be a young person arriving at a Youth Creativity Fund interview ready to explain how their idea could make a difference in their community, while also building skills for the future.
Every week, our team and volunteers have the privilege of being part of moments like these. We meet young people who are thinking seriously about what comes next and who are willing to try, ask questions, and learn. Our role is to help them build confidence and direction. In return, we’re often left feeling inspired and hopeful about what’s ahead.
Youth are quite literally our future. When we invest in them, we’re investing in the long-term strength of our workforce, our local economy, and our community as a whole. Across Waterloo Region, we’re seeing strong demand for our programs because young people and their caregivers are thinking carefully about life after high school. With rapid changes in technology, the growth of AI, and increased automation, many are wondering what work will look like and how to prepare for it.
This is where the BEP plays an essential role. By bringing real career stories into schools and creating opportunities to explore work in practical ways, we help young people understand what’s possible and build up their skills.
This work only happens because of the collective support of our community. By continuing to share your time, experience, and resources, you’re helping young people build their paths forward and strengthening Waterloo Region’s future in the process. Thank you for being part of this work. We are looking forward to all that is to come this year.
