What does it look like?

Practicums are designed to provide students with practical work and learning experiences. They emphasize the importance of learning by doing and reflecting. They’re where students can transfer their knowledge to actual work or an applicable setting. Practicums can also open opportunities to network and make contacts within a particular field.

• Provides opportunity for skill development and exploration for students in a specific setting, often with the guidance of a skilled, experience mentor

Employers and Community

• Promotes youth engagement, and provides relevant experience in an applied setting

• Develops talent, skills, and employees/contributors related to a specific setting

Educators

• Provides meaningful, relevant experience for motivated students with an interest in expanding experience and skills

• May link directly to curricular learning outcomes and promote cross curricular-focused instruction

• May be particularly engaging for those with a specific interest or passion who are motivated to expand their experiences

• Practicum experiences may be a helpful support in clarifying talent, motivation, leadership ability, and potential for community contributors and employees

• Allows for close work with colleagues/students to provide curricular programming that is relevant and connected to practicum placement
