Students Tackle Mental Health Misinformation at WRHN ICE Challenge
April 2, 2026
Yesterday we had the absolute pleasure of hosting students for an Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Challenge in partnership with the WRHN.
Yesterday, our hospital corridors were buzzing with a different kind of energy. We had the absolute pleasure of hosting students for an Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) Challenge in partnership with the WRHN.
The mission we handed these bright minds wasn't easy, but it is one of the most pressing issues in modern healthcare: How do we debunk false information in mental health?
With TikTok "therapists," celebrity-endorsed wellness fads, and out-of-context statistics flooding social media, separating mental health facts from fiction has never been harder—or more important.
The Challenge: Fact vs. Fiction
Mental health misinformation isn't just annoying; it's dangerous. It can prevent people from seeking professional help, increase stigma, and promote unsafe coping mechanisms.
Yesterday, students rolled up their sleeves to figure out how healthcare professionals and community leaders can cut through the noise. They didn't just identify the problems; they engineered solutions.
Here is a look at the game plan the students developed to bust mental health myths:
Source Verification: Learning to look past the blue checkmarks and follower counts to find the actual credentials of the person giving advice.
The "Sensationalism" Filter: If a post promises a "quick fix" or a "miracle cure" for a complex mental health condition, it’s a massive red flag.
Seek Help from the Source: Encouraging individuals to connect with a certified health care professional should always be the first step.
Platform-Specific Strategy: Creating engaging, bite-sized, evidence-based content for platforms like TikTok and Instagram to meet people where they are actually looking for help.
Innovation in Action
The energy during the pitch session was electric. Students brainstormed everything from peer-led school workshops to interactive digital campaigns that gamify the concept of media literacy in healthcare.
A Huge Thank You
We want to extend a massive thank you to the WRHN for co-hosting this event, to the educators who guided these students, and most importantly, to the students themselves. Your creativity, passion, and fresh perspectives are exactly what the future of healthcare needs.
Keep questioning, keep innovating, and keep pushing for the truth!
