The Village Connection: Building Social Infrastructure Between Generations
March 26, 2026
What happens when you mix the energy of local youth with the lived experience of our elders? You get a blueprint for a stronger, more connected Kitchener.
The Village Connection: Building Social Infrastructure Between Generations
Today, the Business Education Partnership (BEP) headed to The Village of Winston Park for an ICE Challenge that felt deeply personal. The challenge was simple in its wording but profound in its goal: “How might we create stronger connections between youth and residents at The Village of Winston Park?”
More Than Just a Visit: Creating Social Infrastructure
In urban planning, we often talk about "social infrastructure"—the physical spaces and programs that allow people to connect. At Winston Park, the students weren't just brainstorming "friendly visits"; they were looking at how to weave two different generations into the same social fabric.
The students explored innovative ways Shlegel Villages bridges the gap:
Skill-Sharing Hubs: Trading tech lessons for life stories and traditional crafts.
Intergenerational "Main Streets": Designing shared spaces within the Village where students and residents naturally cross paths daily.
Digital Storytelling: Creating platforms where youth can help seniors document their legacy while learning about the history of their own community.
Wisdom Meets Innovation
There is a unique magic that happens when a 17-year-old sits across from someone who has seen 80 years of history. During the challenge, students had the opportunity to tour the Village and speak directly with residents. They didn't just see a retirement home; they saw a "campus of care" where wisdom is a primary resource.
"The greatest untapped resource in our community is the collective wisdom of our elders." – Inspired by the Schlegel Villages philosophy.
Today’s session reminded us that youth aren't just the "future"—they are the bridge-builders of the present. By tackling the challenge of social isolation, these students are proving that community isn't just about where you live, but how you show up for one another.
The Power of Perspective
By the end of the day, the room was buzzing with prototypes and ideas that could fundamentally change how we view aging and youth in Waterloo Region. We walked away with more than just solutions; we walked away with a renewed sense of what it means to belong to a "Village."
A massive thank you to the team at The Village of Winston Park for opening your doors and your hearts, and to the students for proving that empathy is the ultimate tool for innovation.
