Entrepreneur, Soil Scientist, Worm Farmer

Worm Wrangler

Job Description

I’m a soil nerd turned worm farmer, and the founder of Worm Wrangler, where I raise worms to help people compost and build healthier soils. My work blends science, sustainability, small-business management, and hands-on education. I love sharing what soil is, how composting works, and why living soils matter for our environment. You can often find me teaching in community centres, at events, and in schools.

As a solo entrepreneur, I also run every part of my business. That means doing much more than worm farming—only about 20% of my day-to-day is actually tending to the worms! The rest includes advertising, photography, web design, accounting, packaging coordination, networking, customer service, and managing supplies and inventory. Running a small business means wearing a lot of hats, and I enjoy the variety and creativity that comes with it.

Through the Business Education Partnership, I’m available to present about my career path—from soil science to entrepreneurship—and what it’s like to build a small, sustainability-focused business. I’m also happy to visit your classroom independently to share engaging, curriculum-connected content about soils, composting, and vermiculture. Please contact me directly at wormwrangler.org to coordinate educational activities.

Career Story

After finishing high school near Edmonton, I went to the University of Saskatchewan to study agriculture. Early on, I discovered soil science—something I knew almost nothing about beforehand—and quickly became fascinated. I completed a four-year degree in Soil Science, worked as a summer research assistant for professors I admired, and stayed on to complete a master’s degree in soil science focused on land reclamation in the oil sands.

Alongside my academic work, I became deeply involved in student leadership and university governance, which led to opportunities in student recruitment and supporting students in their transition to university. After completing my master’s, I bounced around the country following my partner's career and underestimated how disadvantaged that would leave me career-wise.

I began selling composting worms on Kijiji as a small side project, and demand grew faster than I expected. Eventually, I realized I was selling more worms than I could keep up with—and that this small idea had real potential. I built a website, formalized the business, and committed to becoming a full-time entrepreneur. That was the start of Worm Wrangler.
