Rochelle Williams

Pastry chef/owner

The Dessert Artist

Job Description

I’m a pastry chef and business owner, which means I get to design and make desserts for a living and run my own company at the same time.

On one side, I’m an artist in the kitchen. I create cakes and cookies that look really cool and taste amazing. Sometimes people come to me with ideas, like a birthday, wedding, or even a company logo, and I turn those ideas into something you can eat.

On the other side, I’m also the boss of my business. I plan menus, talk to customers, manage orders, price my work, and figure out how to grow my brand, The Dessert Artist. So it’s not just baking, I’m also making decisions every day about how to run a successful business.

A big part of my job is problem-solving and creativity. No two orders are exactly the same, so I’m always thinking, “How can I make this look awesome?” and “How can I make this work?”

So basically: I turn ideas into desserts and I run the business that makes it all happen.

Career Story

My career path wasn’t a straight line and that’s actually pretty normal.

In high school, I took co-op (in grade 11 and 12) in the food industry because I wanted to see if baking was something I truly enjoyed as a career, not just a hobby. That experience helped me realize I liked working in a kitchen environment and wanted to keep pursuing it.

After graduating, I went to college for three years to study baking and pastry arts, where I learned the technical skills behind what I do today.

From there, I spent about eight years working in the food industry, gaining hands-on experience in different kitchens and bakeries. During that time, I built my skills, learned how the industry works, and figured out what kind of environment I wanted to be part of.

Eventually, I realized I didn’t just want to work in someone else’s kitchen (unfortunately due to numerous toxic work environments), I wanted to create my own space and do things differently. That’s when I decided to start my own business.

In August 2022, I launched The Dessert Artist, specializing in custom cakes and sugar cookies. As the business grew, I honed in on my Black heritage and regularly incorporate Black imagery into my designs as well as making Jamaican treats (like Jamaican patties).

Even now, I’m still learning every day. Not just about baking, but about running a business and growing a brand.
