Explore Your Future

Explore Your Future is a series of FREE events to help Waterloo Region youth learn about some career options. While geared towards the early stage research needs of grade 7 to 10 students, it is open to any youth and family that are interested .

Note: This event takes place over Zoom. A link will be sent out to registered attendees about 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Working with Words

Do you enjoy writing? Do you like painting pictures with words? Being persuasive? Clearly sharing an idea? Describing something in detail, accurately? Do you like researching? Asking questions?

There are many jobs that require someone to work with words. Jobs such as those working in journalism, corporate or nonprofit communications, marketing, and more.

Our panel features a range of people who everyday need to use words to achieve results at work. Learn more about exactly what they do now and how their career journey brought them to this point. You can expect great advice for future wordsmiths!

OUR PANEL

Shawn Falcao - Manager, Corporate Communications

An experienced corporate communications professional with significant experience in government administration, Shawn is currently Manager, Corporate Communications, at the City of Kitchener. He previously worked for the Region of Waterloo, and the City of Cambridge. He holds a Master of Digital Experience Innovation with the University of Waterloo, a marketing management post grad from Humber College and a BA in Honours Communication Studies and Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Phil Froklage - Digital Content Manager

Phil FroklagePhil Froklage is a marketing professional in the Waterloo Region tech community with a background in philosophy and english literature. He’s created written, audio and video content for organizations like Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Thalmic Labs, Communitech, Voltera and many more. He’s currently the Digital Content Manager at Magnet Forensics.

Meghan Huras - Senior Manager, Corporate Communications

Meghan has worked in the tech industry for over a decade and currently manages executive and employee communications for OpenText – one of Canada’s largest software companies. Prior to tech, Meghan managed PR and internal communications at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. Meghan has a B.A., Communications from Brock University and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Public Relations from Mohawk College.

Anam Latif - Reporter

Anam Latif is a reporter at the Waterloo Region Record newspaper. She started her career as a summer intern after finishing a Master of Journalism degree at Ryerson University more than seven years ago. Anam grew up in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and came to Canada to complete her undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University. She calls Waterloo Region home.

Agenda

Each panelist will have 5 minutes to describe what they do and their career journey.

Then you get a chance to ask them questions about their jobs, the steps they took towards their goals and the career decisions they made along the way.
